Job Description:

Under the direction of a licensed registered nurse, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) assists in direct patient care by providing for activities of daily living (ADL), comfort, nutrition, and hygiene needs for the adult and geriatric patient. The Patient Care Assistant takes and records clinical measures, collects specimens, provides transportation, and maintains equipment and supplies. The PCA immediately informs RN of any changes in patient condition and reinforces patient teaching as part of providing a safe patient centered care environment. May assist with patient charts as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrates full knowledge and understanding of concepts and procedures needed to be successful in the role, including knowledge of applicable department, organization and external rules and regulations impacting day to day processes. For clinical positions, this includes clinical procedures required by department and unit, as demonstrated by unit -based competency testing. 

  • Ability to speak and write effectively, demonstrates fundamental command of language, communicates well using all mediums.

  • Prepares and delivers patient information in a manner that is consistent with the requirements of the role. Includes what happens during a clinical visit with patients, why a particular procedure or service is being performed or why a particular device is being used.

  • Embraces the principle of keeping patients safe by following safety policies and procedures, treating people with respect, and speaking up in Patient Safety related situations.

  • Position may require local travel between various Organization locations.


Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a Nursing Assistant program or completion of a first semester of RN program required.
  • Conversant in English and experience in computerized charting required.
  • Recent employment as a Nursing Assistant preferred.


Certfications Required:

  • Current certification as a Nursing Assistant/CNA from the State of California, or completion of First semester of Registered Nurse program or equivalent. Note that if using CNA Certification, must meet all requirements for certification renewal including obtaining 48 hours of CEUs every two years and obtaining a minimum of 12 of those CEUs in each year of the certification period.
  • Current BLS (American Heart Association)
