Job Description:

Clinical Lab Scientist I and II:

Performs a range of standard and/or technically demanding procedures in one or more of the Clinical Laboratory disciplines exercising initiative and independent judgment. Communicates technical or general information to their manager, director, & medical staff. May provide instruction in the basic theory, technical skills and application of laboratory test procedures. May provide functional supervision to support personnel.


Clinical Scientist Technical Specialist:

Performs Clinical Lab Scientist above job functions. Additionally is responsible for technical oversight of a specific laboratory discipline-for example, Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Safety Management, etc. Oversight includes method evaluations, instrument set up, procedure writing, staff training, competency assessment, identifies need for coaching and counseling, provision of input for performance reviews, inputs and assists with review of nonconforming events and introduction of new test methodologies, maintaining/overseeing compliance with CAP accreditation standards.


Essential Functions

Clinical Scientist I

Performance of analytical procedures:

  • Performs a range of standard procedures in one or more of the clinical laboratory disciplines.
  • Recognizes critical or significant findings.
  • Operates instruments and other equipment following established procedures.
  • Performs calibration, standardization and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Performs simple trouble-shooting activities according to established guidelines.
  • Disseminates laboratory test information in a timely manner.
  • Utilizes the laboratory information system or other established systems to verify and document results.


Performance of quality management & performance improvement:

  • Demonstrates behaviors that support performance improvement activities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the principles and practices of quality management and performance improvement.
  • Monitors accuracy and precision of laboratory tests personally performed.
  • Adheres to quality control protocols to assure accuracy of results.
  • Review new procedures and instructions as needed.
  • Documents nonconforming events.


Education and Training:

  • Maintains competence and professional development.
  • Maintains license, certification or registration as required.
  • Actively participates in continuing education programs.
  • Involved in education of student Clinical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Technicians.


Clinical Care:

Ensure that quality patient care is delivered to all patients on a 24-hour basis, and the section is maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards and the philosophy and goals of Hoag.


Perform other duties as assigned.


Clinical Scientist II

In addition to above, the Clinical Scientist II is responsible for:


Performance of analytical procedures:

  • Expert level skills in primary are of expertise, to provide guidance to all staff and assist with final reporting of results and problem solving.
  • Performs advanced instrument troubleshooting & maintenance.
  • Monitor performance data.
  • Collects data and analyzes for trends.


Performance Improvement & Compliance:

  • Participates in process improvement activities and project implementation
  • Assists in ensuring that departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) reflect current practice and regulatory requirements, brings discrepancies to attention of the Lead or Manager.
  • Authors and revises SOPs as assigned.
  • Documents and participates in resolution of non-conforming events.


Functional Supervision:

  • Sets standard of conduct and leads by example.
  • Provide functional supervision of support personnel.
  • May act as the "lead individual" or ‚ÄúResponsible Tech" on weekends or other periods of reduced staffing.


Education and Training:

  • Participates in staff and student training and competency assessment.
  • Assembles training and competency documents.


Clinical Scientist Technical Specialist:

In addition to the above, the Technical Specialist is responsible for the following:


  • Establishes, monitors and reviews quality control, proficiency and maintenance data for assigned specialty.
  • Identifies and justifies new test/instrument implementation.
  • Implements new tests and equipment, including evaluation, correlations, procedure writing, staff training and competency.
  • Coordinates with Laboratory IT the test definitions and interfaces required for new test/instrument.
  • Provides data to Manager as requested.
  • Serving as Scientific and Technical expert for assigned specialty subject matter.
  • Act as a resource to other Techs with troubleshooting and ongoing education.
  • Work with Medical Director to assure appropriate medical consultation for patients with abnormal laboratory test results, if appropriate, or to intervene when NCE may influence patient care adversely.
  • Review Proficiency Testing results with section after grading.
  • Provides data to Manager or Medical Director as requested.
  • Participates in employee training and competency assessment as assigned.
  • With Manager's approval, participates in meetings of appropriate medical specialties affected by the laboratory section.


Education, Training and Experience


Clinical Scientist I:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related science
  • Zero to two (0-2) years of experience


Clinical Scientist II:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related science
  • Three to Five (3-5) years of relevant clinical experience


Technical Specialist:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related science
  • Five (5) years of relevant clinical experience in their area of expertise



Technical Specialist:

  • Specialist License/Certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent


Skills or Other Qualifications


  • General and working knowledge of laboratory medicine and detailed knowledge of one or more of the following areas: transfusion medicine, microbiology, serology, chemistry, hematology, urinalysis and coagulation testing.
  • Skilled in reading documents written in Standard English as well as scientific documents such as Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines.
  • Skilled in writing technical reports.
  • Skilled at speaking using appropriate vocabulary and grammar such to ensure information is obtained and policies and procedures are understood.
  • Skilled in the use of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.
  • Knowledge of the metric system.
  • Word processing skill to prepare reports.
  • Knowledge of where to go within the organization for information and ability to judge what information should be passed on to others including management.
  • Good communication, customer service and teamwork skills.



  • Laboratory Information Systems and Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Information systems with emphasis on Microsoft applications


License and Certifications


  • State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License OR
  • One of the following State of California Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist License
  • Clinical Chemist Scientist License (work limited to Chemistry only)
  • Clinical Hematologist Scientist License (work limited to Hematology only)
  • Clinical Immunohematologist Scientist License (work limited to Blood Bank only)
  • Clinical Microbiologist Scientist License (work limited to Microbiology only)
  • Public Health Microbiologist Certification (work limited to Microbiology only)

  • Valid California License or Certification as required for scope of work in area of specialty or subspecialty
